A cycle event aimed at inspiring women and girls to get cycling will return to the Suffolk town of Southwold for its third year.
This year’s Women on Wheels (WoW) will take place on Sunday 22nd July. Three routes have been designed to suit all abilities; 7 miles, 18 miles and 30 miles. They will all start from the William Godell Sports Pavilion with refreshments available en route at the Shadingfield Fox. The event is open for ages 8 to 88, although 8-16-year olds must be accompanied by an adult.
This year there will also be a range of attractions taking place at William Godell Sports Pavilion for those cheering on their friends and family including games, breakfast BBQ, a bar, tea, coffee and cake. There is also an opportunity to win a ladies and child’s bike.
Women on Wheels events are mass participation female-only bike rides around Suffolk that put a strong emphasis on the fun and friendly aspects of cycling. They are aimed at non-cyclists and existing cyclists alike.
Suffolk’s most active county programme is supporting local towns and villages to develop WoW rides in their communities. The aim of this is to encourage more women and girls to cycle on a more regular basis, making a positive contribution to Suffolk becoming the most active county in England.
Councillor James Reeder, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for health, said: “We are delighted that Southwold Women on Wheels is part of the calendar of events again this year. We’re hoping that as Southwold is such a popular tourist town that both residents and visitors alike will take part in this ride and enjoy the day”.
Cathy Ryan, Secretary of Southwold and District Rotary stated “We are thrilled to bring Women on Wheels back to Southwold. It has been such a hit over the last couple of years and we hope that even more women and girls will get involved in 2018. Last year we had 68 riders and our aim is to beat that!”
The local sponsor for 2018’s event is So Southwold, a luxury holiday cottage letting agency. George Bradley, General Manager from So Southwold said: “We are thrilled to be sponsoring Women on Wheels, it’s a fantastic event with a real sense of community. We love to encourage exercise and enjoyment of the Suffolk Countryside as it is such a beautiful area for bike riding. Many of our team will be taking part in the event and we can’t wait to get our helmets ready for the big day!”.
