Taster sessions are about to start locally as part of the ActivIpswich project, a sports initiative targeted at those over the age of 45 who are not currently taking part in regular sport or physical activity.
The programme is a partnership project between ActivLives and Ipswich Borough Council, and is funded by Sport England and the National Lottery.
“We have two sports, archery and lawn bowls, starting up over the next few weeks both of which are targeted at mature adults who don’t currently play regular sport”, said Mike McCarthy from ActivLives.
“Archery is a terrific sport to get involved with as it provides a high skill challenge and is more physical than you might imagine. Having said that, it is a very inclusive sport with many participants having a disability or long term health condition”.
“Lawn bowls is a gem of a game that is also very skilful but great fun and a real challenge”.
Participants don’t need any previous experience of either sport as all of the equipment and guidance will be provided.
Both activities are being held outdoors: Archery ‘ActivArrows’ is running for five weeks on Monday mornings throughout July at Gainsborough Sports Centre in Ipswich and ‘ActivLawn Bowls’ is being held at Kesgrave on Tuesday mornings throughout the summer up until the 11th September.
