The Viking StreetVelodrome Series returns to Suffolk for the third consecutive year as part of the Newmarket Festival. After the fantastic success of last year’s event in Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket takes up the challenge of the StreetVelodrome and will welcome the three day event to the Severals Pavilion on Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July.
The innovative pop up velodrome race series with dramatic banked corners, is held over five rounds in five different UK locations, with six teams of male and female pro riders competing in a series of Olympic style head to head pursuit races, aiming to win either Gold, Silver or Bronze for their respective team. The event is being delivered by Abbeycroft Leisure, in partnership with Suffolk County Council and Newmarket Festival.
The weekend of 7-9th July will kick off with an opportunity for local schools to try out the track first and set the pace for the weekend of cycling. On Friday evening, local businesses will compete against one another in a fun corporate team racing event.
On Saturday 8th, the amateur riders will have a go on the track before the pros take the lead in round Four of the Viking StreetVelodrome Series. With the Suffolk female amateur rider Anita Vickers winning the national amateur title in 2016, the pressure is on for another local amateur to top the podium this year! Then, the Suffolk Saints, featuring BMX National Champion John Stockwell and Canadian elite rider Kara Gaetz-Bruce, will return to their home county to compete against their fellow teams in the Pro Series on Saturday afternoon to finish off a day of nail-biting racing.
Joining them will be the county’s future cycling talent with the DeNovo Kids Series. The Series includes two great competitions; The Sharks v Tigers for 3 to 11 year olds and the DeNovo NexGen Series for 12 to 16 year olds.
On Sunday 9th, it’s the public’s turn to ride for free on the unique track and there’s no need to pre-register!
Warren Smyth, Chief Executive of Abbeycroft Leisure said: “This will be the first time that Newmarket has hosted StreetVelodrome. It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to watch track cycling and importantly have a go themselves. The professional event will be covered by national TV on Saturday and spectators in Newmarket will get a front row seat. We hope it will boost interest in cycling and encourage more people to get out and about on their bikes.”
John Stockwell and Kara Gaetz-Bruce, were joined by 2014 & 2015 series champion Dave Johnson from Team London this week to coach children at Newmarket Leisure Centre and to promote the StreetVelodrome Series.
The Viking StreetVelodrome Series will be just one event taking place in an exciting year for cycling in Newmarket with The Hilly on 25th June, a challenging Cyclo-Sportive around the beautiful country lanes of Suffolk. Then on September 8th, Newmarket will host the launch of stage six of the Tour of Britain. These incredible cycling events will support Suffolk’s ambition to become England’s most active county.
StreetVelodrome Series Director, Carl Thompson, said: ““We’re simply so excited that the Viking StreetVelodrome Series is coming back to Suffolk for a third year. The response we get every time we visit is fantastic. There is such an encouraging appetite, within the County, for people to be active, and importantly to enjoy being active. And we’re very proud to be part of that.”
